According to data from Euromonitor, the Chinese athletic clothing market is expected to grow by 7% this year, reaching $59 billion, exceeding the expected growth rate of 0.8% for non-sports apparel and footwear market. Nike's sales in the Greater China region grew by 4.5% in the first quarter, with its sales base significantly higher than that of smaller competitors. Adidas saw an 8% growth in its China business in the first quarter. In contrast, smaller competitor Lululemon, a Canadian yoga apparel manufacturer, experienced a 45% increase in sales in China, while its overall sales only grew by 2% in the softening US market. Consumer analysts at HSBC point out that as the market matures, niche categories and brands will have greater growth potential.
